Dick Advocaat was a defensive midfielder who began his career with ADO Den Haag in 1967. He played eight seasons with the club and won the KNVB Cup in 1968 but only from the 1969/70 season, he became a regular in the side. From 1973, he moved to Roda JC until he moved to VVV-Venlo during the 1976/77 season. In 1978, he made the move to the United States to play with the Chicago Sting in the North American Soccer League (NASL). Following the 1980 NASL season, Advocaat moved to Sparta Rotterdam then moved to Belgium and played in the second division for K. Berchem Sport. However, he only made ten appearances there before moving back to the Eredivisie to join Utrecht, where he ended his playing career.
