English quartet Ladytron were an integral part of the initial Electroclash sound, though they tended towards the pop end of the spectrum. They were definitely one of the more talented acts, which is shown by their longevity - they are still releasing well-received records 20 years on. In the early days, they performed in militaristic garb, androgynous and monochrome - and their sound matches.
Once referred to by Pitchfork as 'the second coming of Elastica' (which I *love*), Ladytron is an apt monkiker. The music is dystopian, somewhat robotic, synthy, and sensuous - but in an artificial way. It's cold, but there is warmth at its core. Songs like "He Took Her To A Movie", "Playgirl", and "Seventeen" are core pieces of the Electroclash genre, and while Ladytron themselves are more suitably categorized as Electropop, or maybe just synthpop, these tracks - and most of the two albums on rotation today - are undeniably Electroclash.
Today we are listening to two of their classic albums, 604 (2001) and Light and Magic (2002). If you like what you hear, check out their Best Of 00-10 compilation, or their latest, the devilishly dark 2019 Ladytron.
