Kitty Litter Cake Recipe

In the early aughts, I used to host raucous girls-night-in parties with gag gifts, commemorative t-shirts, and enough booze to make Ben Affleck blush. We let our hair down, told dirty jokes, and played games until the sun came up. One year, I made a delightfully diabolical dish called Kitty Litter Cake.

Recently, the recipe has resurfaced on TikTok with people making it for Halloween so I thought I’d give it another whirl. The results were just as appalling-yet-appealing as they were back then so I wanted to share the process with my fellow pranksters.

The joke works best when it’s served in an actual cat box with a scoop as the serving utensil.

It goes without saying, but these items should be brand new and washed before use.

The foundation of the dessert is one white (or vanilla) cake mix and one chocolate cake mix. I think it’s easier to make both of them simultaneously so I had two set-ups in place.

Preheat your oven to 350, and grease two 9x13 baking trays. I use PAM Baking spray to coat mine.

Follow the directions on each cake box, but pay attention because they could call for different measurements depending on the flavor.

The white mix called for 1 cup of water, 1/2 cup of canola oil, and three eggs.

The chocolate fudge powder required 1 and 1/4 cups of water, 1/2 cup of canola oil, and three eggs.

Pour your batter into your separate baking dishes.

Now the most important step of all… unplug your mixer and give the beaters to your boyfriend to lick off the excess batter!

If you don’t have a double oven, you can place both trays on the same rack. The cooking times might vary slightly (29-35 minutes) so keep an eye on them through the door.

Insert a toothpick into each cake to see if they are finished cooking. If it comes out clean, the cakes are ready to be removed from oven and placed on cooling racks.

While the cakes are baking, prepare your two packages of instant vanilla pudding. Since you’re using two boxes, you’ll need to double the cold milk to 4 cups total. Whisk the ingredients and place in the bowl in the refrigerator to set.

Next, dump your Oreos into a gallon Ziploc bag and use a rolling pin to crush the cookies into pieces. The crumbs should be the size of coarse sea salt or smaller.

Place about a 1/2 cup of the crushed cookies into a mixing bowl and add 3-5 drops of green or blue food coloring. Start out lightly because you can always add more.

Line your new cat container with parchment paper.

Crumble the cakes into a large bowl while adding in pudding and crushed cookies. Save a few of the Oreo bits to top the mixture with.

The more cookies you put on top, the more realistic it looks. Sprinkle the colored crumbs on the top layer. Spread them evenly on the surface of your cake.

Now the pièce de résistance… Tootsie Rolls!

Microwave a few pieces for about 10 seconds and mold them into perfect little poos. Taper the ends into a point for added effect. Add the droppings on top and toss a few of the cookie sprinkles around.

Flush and serve!
