The Alcantara Gorges, one of the most spectacular places in Sicily

The Alcantara Gorges are located in the Alcantara Valley just between the province of Catania and Messina. They are part of the municipalities of Castiglione di Sicilia and Motta Camastra. The Alcantra Gorges (aka Gole di Larderia) are a natural canyon stretching over 1900 hectares with walls that reach a height of 50 meters and 2 to 5 meters in width.

The Alcantara Gorges are named after the river that crosses them, and contrary to popular belief, they were not created through the incessant flow of water over the millennia, but were instead created by successive volcanic lava flow over the last 8000 years. When eventually cooled, the lava gave life to the fascinating prismatic forms of the columnar basalts that today frame the almost surreal scenery of this place.

In order to preserve this unique geological landscape, the Alcantara Botanical and Geological Park was founded in the 1960s. The icy waters of the river flow through paths lined with splendid citrus groves and panoramic points of extraordinary beauty. This is a not-to-be-missed nature trail perfect for river trekking, body rafting and other outdoor excursions during the warmer months.
