The Black Cat Cabaret

Located at the foot of the Montmartre hill at 68, boulevard de Clichy in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, the Chat Noir cabaret was one of the great meeting places for all of Paris and the symbol of Bohemia at the end of the 19th century. . It is one of the emblems of the Roaring Twenties (Late 19th century-1914). The name Chat Noir comes from the little black cat found during the work of fitting out the cabaret by Rodolphe Salis, its founder.

Who is the author of The Black Cat Poster?

Of Swiss origin, painter and designer, the artist Alexandre Steinlen , has lived on the Butte Montmartre since 1883 and frequented the Chat Noir cabaret as well as other artists of the time (notably Toulouse Lautrec) - it was during this period that he was commissioned by Salis to create the black cat poster which would subsequently become an extremely famous poster. He is influenced in his style by Art Nouveau which was in full swing as well as his taste for cat sketches.

Why is the Chat Noir poster iconic?

This poster of Le Chat Noir perfectly represents the soul of Montmartre and the atmosphere of its cabarets. The design and curves of the feline are perfectly mastered by Steinlen who made it his favorite drawing animal. The emblematic black cat with piercing eyes was the symbol of the cabaret bearing the same name. The composition is contrasted with the cat in the central position and its piercing jet black eyes, the use of a yellowish background and a red insert to highlight the name of Rodolphe Salis.
