Iredell-Statesville Schools has moved up the start times for high school football games for the remainder of the regular season beginning Thursday, the district announced Wednesday.
The junior varsity football teams will now kick off at 6 p.m. on Thursdays, and the varsity games will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays.
I-SS officials stated in a press release that the earlier start times will allow local law enforcement agencies, school officials, and contract security screeners more visibility during the events.
In addition, inside stadium parking will be reserved only for game day staff, the district announced. Any attendee seeking handicapped parking will be directed to a designated area on each campus.
The changes were made less than a week after a the West Iredell-Statesville varsity football game at Statesville High School was suspended after Statesville police officers found firearms on campus and school officials learned about threats posted on social media.

“These changes are being made, not due to the conduct of our students, but after seeing the dynamics that are surrounding athletics throughout our state,” the I-SS news release explained. “Even though our schools continue to follow the safety and prevention protocols to maintain a safe area for our fans, putting these measures in place are additional ways to increase the safety of our students, staff, and community.”
Fans should expect the same safety protocols in place as they visit I-SS facilities. All attendees will be scanned with handheld metal detectors at the gate. All personal items, including bookbags, purses, and diaper bags, will be searched. Fans are asked to limit the items they bring with them.
All children not in high school should be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the sporting event.
