Context is one factor leading to the creation of a perceptual set. This refers to the environment or setting in which the perception is made.
Motivation refers to how we interpret visual information and may be affected by our motivation levels. For example, if an individual feels unmotivated, they may not see the world as a motivated person does. Also, fans watching a football game, will be motivated to see their team win.
Emotional state refers to the way an individual may perceive a situation as their feeling and emotions may affect their outlook on life. For example, if a person is sad they will not see the world like a happy person does.
Past experiences are all personal experiences that have occurred throughout ones life. Such experiences predispose the individual to perceive info in a certain way.
Cultural factors refer to the way an individual or a community perceive things. They may have a different ideas about religion, customs, values and languages and therefore have a different outlook to someone from a different culture. In some cultures, the language only permits them to have basic colours in their vocabulary like red, blue, black and yellow. What we may perceive as a ‘pink’ they may perceive as a ‘red tone’.
