Terry Smith grew up in northern Minnesota. After graduating from Grand Rapids Highschool, he attended Itasca Junior College, in Coleraine, Minnesota, and the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis. In 1986 Smith was promoted to Special Agent in Charge of the BCA's Bemidji Regional Office. He supervised all of the agency's work in northern Minnesota, including approximately 450 death investigations. He has been a featured speaker at a number of police conferences and for years taught death investigation classes for police officers. In 2001 he received the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association honorable mention award as Minnesota Police Officer of the Year. He retired in 2003. Terry Smith still lives in Minnesota with his wife, Elizabeth. He's an accomplished public speaker and enjoys telling entertaining tales about his days "on the job."
