London’s largest conference and exhibition space is adding a 40,900m² to the eastern side of the main centre to meet demand for hosting ‘world-leading events’.
The expansion is the third phase of development for the ExCeL Centre. Grimshaw also designed Phase 2, which includes the International Convention Centre, and opened in 2010.
Until recently the centre was temporarily converted by BDP into the NHS Nightingale Hospital in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is still being used as a vaccination centre.

An ExCeL London spokesperson said: ‘Following a successful public consultation and pre-application engagement process with the London Borough of Newham and the GLA, ExCeL has now submitted our application for a Phase 3 extension. Newham Council has validated the application and in turn started its own statutory consultation process, inviting comments from residents.’
