Sadly, Winky Wright’s video game Cinderella run ends in defeat

Wright pulled two major upsets en route to a loss in the eWBSS middleweight finals.

The other day, we discussed Winky Wright’s video game avatar upsetting Sugar Ray Leonard’s video game avatar in the World Boxing Super Series’ video game simulation middleweight tournament, and how that made some people mad. Then it made some of you mad.

Well, Winky Wright then beat Carlos Monzon in the semifinals. Like Leonard, Monzon was overcome by the devastating and legendary power of Winky Wright. In his real life career, Leonard was only stopped once, and it was as an old man who hadn’t fought in six years. Monzon was never stopped in 100 fights from 1963-77. But it has to be said, neither of them ever had to face a true bomber like Ronald “Winky” Wright, knockout machine.

So here was eWinky, in the eFinal at eMiddleweight, lined up to face eSugar eRay eRobinson, considered the pound-for-pound GOAT by many to this day.

This time, even the monster power of Wright’s storied concrete fists wasn’t enough.

Winky Wright’s Cinderella run in fantasy land came to a conclusive end, with the great Sugar Ray Robinson winning a sixth round knockout.

It’s also worth a note that this tournament ran into the same problem their heavyweight tournament did, where Joe Frazier won a first round fight and then had to be replaced in the second round. At middleweight, Marvin Hagler beat Kelly Pavlik and was set to fight Robinson in the semifinals, but then Hagler was pulled and replaced by Jake LaMotta, who had lost in the first round to Monzon.

Boxing. Even in video games, it’s boxing.
