Halloween Kitty Litter Cake

- #28758
If you want a dessert that will truly disgust and amuse your guests then this is it! Crumbled cake is mixed with pudding and cookie crumbs with gooey tootsie roll "surprises" to look like a real litter box. Great for Halloween, April Fool's Day, or anytime you want to gross someone out.
ingredients
1 box (15-18 ounce size) German chocolate cake mix, plus ingredients to prepare
1 box (15-18 ounce size) white cake mix, plus ingredients to prepare
2 packages (4-serving size) instant vanilla pudding mix
1 package (12 ounce size) vanilla sandwich cookies
3 drops green food coloring
1 package (12 ounce size) tootsie rolls, unwrapped
directions
Preheat the oven to the temperature recommended on the cake mix packages.
Prepare the German chocolate and white cake mixes as directed and bake in 9x13-inch pans. Let cool.
While the cakes are baking prepare the pudding mix as directed on package and chill until ready to assemble the dessert.
Pulverize the sandwich cookies in small batches in a food processor until the are the consistency of fine crumbs. Remove 1/4 cup of the cookie crumbles and add the green food coloring to it. Stir well to mix evenly.
Crumble the cooled cakes into a large bowl. Toss with half of the uncolored crushed cookies and the chilled pudding, adding only enough pudding until it's moist but not soggy (you probably won't use all the pudding).
Put the cake mixture into a new, washed kitty litter box. Optionally, you can use a clean kitty litter liner if you wish.
Place half of the unwrapped tootsie rolls on a microwave safe plate. Heat for 15 second intervals until soft and pliable (but not melted). Shape the soft tootsie rolls so that the ends are not blunt and then curve them slightly. Gently bury the tootsie rolls randomly in the cake mixture.
Sprinkle the top of the cake with the remaining uncolored cookie crumbs. Lightly sprinkle some of the green crumbs over the top.
Heat 3-4 of the remaining tootsie rolls until almost completely melted. Place the melted masses on top of the cake and sprinkle with some more of the green crumbs.
Heat the remaining tootsie rolls until soft and pliable and shape as before. Place on top of the cake randomly, hanging one of them off the edge of the pan so it looks like the cat missed the mark.
Sprinkle the top with any remaining crumbs.
Serve the kitty litter cake with a new, clean, kitty litter pooper scooper.
recipe tips
Make sure the cakes are cool before crumbling otherwise they may get soggy.
Mix the pudding, cookie crumbs, and cake crumbles to make a litter-like texture.
Arrange the tootsie rolls creatively for a realistic look.
Use a new, clean kitty litter box and scoop.
Serve the cake as part of a themed party, like Halloween or April Fool’s Day.
Explain the cake to guests before serving to avoid misunderstandings.
Have fun with the presentation to maximize the 'gross-out' factor.
Remember, the goal is to create a humorous and edible dessert that looks unappetizing but tastes delicious.
common recipe questions
Can I use different cake flavors?
Yes, you can use any flavor of cake mix you prefer. The ones here look most like kitty litter when crumbled and combined.
Is it necessary to use food coloring?
The green food coloring is used to mimic the appearance of chlorophyll in cat litter, but it's optional.
Can I make this cake in advance?
Yes, you can prepare it a day ahead, but add the tootsie roll "surprises" closer to serving time.
How do I know when the cakes are properly baked?
Follow the instructions on the cake mix package, usually when a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Can I use homemade cake and pudding?
Homemade versions can definitely be used in place of boxed mixes.
How should I store leftover cake?
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Can I prepare the components separately and assemble later?
Yes, you can bake the cakes and prepare the pudding ahead, then assemble later.
Can I use real kitty litter box items?
Yes as long as they are new, clean items never used for pets.
Can I omit the tootsie rolls?
The tootsie rolls are for the 'realistic' effect, but can be omitted if preferred or substituted with some other ingredient that looks like... you know, something the cat left in the litter box.

This venerable recipe came to my attention on Halloween 2000, and I made it the following year for a party. They say presentation is everything. I, too, brought most of it home and enjoyed every last delicious crumb. No attribution was given for the recipe back then, and I'm pleased to see it here. Eat hearty, friends.

This is such a hit, doesn't get eaten much, I too have taken most of it home. Only a couple of people dare to try it, but they like it when they do try. Getting them to try is the hard part, but what a conversation piece!!! I put this in the floor at a party by the kitchen table and listened to how people talked about the hostess and her "dirty" litter box next to the dining room table. A big hit at parties, but don't get your feelings hurt, you WILL be taking most of it home with you!

I made this cake 2 years ago for a party. My friends were so grossed out by the look of it, that they couldn't eat it. Out of all the party goers, only 3 of them ate it, and LOVED IT. I used spice cake in place of the german chocolate cake, and it gave it a flavor like an Entenmann's Coffee Crumb Cake. It was awesome. I ended up bringing it home from the party and my family devoured it. I plan to make it again this year for work and see how it does with my co-workers. I highly recommends this recipe for a really delicious gross looking Halloween treat! :)

I made this cake for my company potluck on Halloween last year. Only a couple of people dared to eat it but when they did, boy was it a hit. The best part was they kept saying, "Oh, it's so gross, but it tastes so freakin' good!" I definitly recomend making this. I have never had so much fun grossing out my family and co-workers with this recipes!
