Although some tourist destinations require hours of time, a stop at Menteng 1 Elementary School only takes a minute: just long enough to snap a photo of a 10-year-old Barack Obama, or at least a statue of him.

The hotly debated homage to the U.S. president caused controversy when it was erected in a public park in December 2009; locals argued that an Indonesian hero should have been honored in the space instead of a relatively new U.S. leader. The statue was moved in 2010 to this school, which Obama attended while living with his mother in Jakarta from 1967 to 1971.
