And over a decade later the look is making a comeback, with Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and the Hadid sisters among the celebrities bringing 'chav chic' back.

New figures from retail analytics site Edited show a 28 per cent increase in velour tracksuits retailing in UK outlets this year.

Among the top brands stocking the nostalgic athleisure wear are Juicy Couture, Fenty X Puma, Adidas Originals and Stella McCartney.

However, dressing like 2001 Paris Hilton comes at a cost, as the once humble velour tracksuit is now complete with an eye-watering price tag.

A pink Juicy Couture set available on the ASOS website costs a staggering £120, while a velour tracksuit from designer Kith is selling for £330 on luxury site Net-a-Porter.

A spokeswoman for Edited said: 'We've tracked a 28 per cent increase of velour tracksuits retailing in the UK market year-on-year.

'Brands that are getting behind this trend are luxury/designer instead of fast fashion.

'There has been a recent resurgence of velvet on the runway. Designers such as Tom Ford and Prabal Gurung favoured this fabric for their Fall 2019 collections, which will boost interest for mass market retailers.'

However, the velour tracksuit doesn't have the approval of all of fashion's elite.

Chanel's creative director Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away on Monday, once famously said: 'Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.'
