Meet Kidomo, Blank Park Zoo's latest endangered animal

A cud-chewing mammal has joined the ranks of endangered animals that live at Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines.

Kidomo is a 12-year-old okapi that recently resided at Oklahoma Zoo. You can find him in the habitat next to the rhinos, according to a news release from Blank Park Zoo.

“Kidomo is a very outgoing animal considering the okapi as a species is a solitary animal,” said Lou Keeley, supervisor of large mammals at Blank Park Zoo. “It’s a great honor to be able to work with such an endangered animal.”

Okapi have distinctive features such as a long neck and two short horns on their heads. They are the only known living relative of the giraffe.

Blank Park Zoo is also home to several more baby animals, according to the release.

A prehensile-tailed skink was born April 18. Also, two penguins have hatched — a male on May 19 and a female on June 5. Two male addax also were born — one on May 15 and another on June 28.
