Scream 7 hasn't even started filming and there has already been a lot of major behind-the-scenes changes.

In November 2023, both Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who played sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter in Scream (2022) and Scream VI, were confirmed to not be returning for the next movie.

Then in December 2023, director Christopher Landon exited the sequel, calling it a "dream job that turned into a nightmare".

That left the future of the series in doubt, but then in March 2024, Neve Campbell surprisingly announced her return to the series after skipping Scream 6 due to a pay dispute.

The new movie now seems back on track, so here's all you need to know about Scream 7.

Scream 7 potential release date: When can we expect Scream 7?

While Scream 7 is now seemingly back in development, we still don't have an official release date for the new movie.

We do know that Scream creator Kevin Williamson is directing the new movie, which has been written by Guy Busick, co-writer of Scream and Scream VI.

Campbell shared a script page on Instagram when she confirmed her return, so we know a script has been completed. We don't yet know when the movie will start filming though, so the earliest we can expect it is in 2025.

Scream 7 cast: Who could be back for Scream 7?

Despite Ghostface going on the rampage in Scream VI, our "core four" managed to make it through unscathed – even if Chad was stabbed multiple times.

We had thought that meant we could expect Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown to all return as Sam, Tara, Chad and Mindy, respectively.

However, as mentioned above, Barrera and Ortega won't be back for Scream 7, and we're waiting for any confirmation whether this means Gooding and Brown will be back.

In January 2024, Brown said that she didn't know whether she would be back, while Gooding said in March 2024 that he also wasn't sure if it'd be back: "It's one of those things where you wait to hear from the people that make the big decisions."

But there's now one person we do know who will be back: Neve Campbell.

"I'm very happy and proud to say I've been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn't be more thrilled," she wrote on Instagram in March 2024.

In Scream VI, Sidney's absence was explained by Gale saying she took Mark and the kids away and deserves her "happy ending".

Before Campbell's return, Williamson had said that he wants Campbell back and it appears he was a major factor in her return.

She missed out on the last movie due to a dispute over pay, with the star previously stating that the contract offer did not "equate to her worth" to the series.

In terms of other legacy characters, Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers survived her showdown with Ghostface, so should be back. The same goes for Hayden Panettiere's Kirby Reed, who's now an FBI agent specialising in Ghostface cases.

Roger L Jackson would likely also be back to provide the voice of Ghostface, and we'll probably get another cameo from Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis, who still haunts Sam from beyond the grave with killer advice.

Scream 7 plot: Does Scream 6 ending set up a new movie?

Unsurprisingly, even though it has a post-credit scene, Scream VI was a self-contained story with little set-up for a future movie.

Sam and Tara kill the Ghostfaces (there are three of them this time around), Sam agrees to let Tara live her life more independently and Tara says she's going to go to therapy to deal with all the Ghostface trauma.

Before the exits of Barrera and Ortega, we had thought the next movie would see Ghostface back to battle with the Carpenter sisters again. That now, of course, won't happen so we can just imagine they lived happily ever after.

With Campbell's return, we don't know exactly how the story will continue, but don't be surprised if it's another soft reboot of the series rather than a continuation of Scream VI.

Scream 7 trailer: Any Scream 7 footage yet?

Scream 7 might have been confirmed, but since filming has yet to begin, we have no footage to show you. Sorry about that.
