John Cho Is Trending Because of His Hair

Seriously, what kind of hair products is John Cho using?

John Cho's hair is resplendent—the approximate size and shape of a sharable banana split—in a promo for the upcoming live-action Netflix adaptation of the beloved anime Cowboy Bebop. The 48-year-old actor debuts hair that is thick, cushiony, voluminous. These are the kind of touchable curls that would intimidate first season Grey's Anatomy–era Patrick Dempsey.

This is not the kind of hair the internet lets go by. Cho's name trended on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon (June 8), with thousands of the greatest minds of our day chiming in with searing commentary like “Look at John Cho's hair,” and “Ah! John Cho's hair!” Mindy Kaling, who knows from good hair, called Cho's tresses “lustrous.”

Cho will play bad-boy protagonist Spike Spiegel in the live-action adaptation of the late-’90s Japanese TV show, alongside Mustafa Shakir and Daniella Pineda. According to the wiki for the original anime show, Spiegel is a 27-year-old. Some fans have taken issue with Cho's casting, given that the actor is 48. To that I say: No need to harp on accuracy for a sci-fi crime noir story set in the year 2071! Also, we don't complain about a John Cho casting. We just say, “Thank you.”

According to the Cowboy Bebop fandom wiki, Spike Spiegel's hair and general vibe in the anime were inspired by Bob Dylan and Yusaku Matsuda, a Japanese actor. Let's just say John Cho looks like if a young Bob Dylan had been into product and had been handy with a diffuser. We are talking zero frizz and Texas-cheerleader volume. This is the hair Harry Potter wanted but could never pin down.

There's no official premiere date or trailer for Netflix's Cowboy Bebop, though the streaming giant tweeted on June 8 that the show will land on Netflix in the fall. Fans are thrilled the new series will be scored by Yoko Kanno, the composer whose music shines in the original show.

Yes, John Cho is going to play a crime-fighting bounty hunter named Spike in a sci-fi western on Netflix. Yes, his hair will look better than yours. Yes, this is enough, on a sultry summer afternoon, to generate news.

It is John Cho's hair's world, and we are just lucky to be living in it.
