SIGNIFICANT refurbishment works – which had been delayed b y the Covid Pandemic – are now underway at Blennerville windmill.

The works – including the replacement of the windmills sails – will involve repairs to the windmill’s cap and the wooden staging around it and the repainting of the tower.

While the adjacent visitor centre underwent some improvements last summer a major programme of renovations is also planned for the centre.

Two separate applications for funding from Fáilte Ireland to revamp the centre had been unsuccessful but a third bid for State support- made in partnership with the Blennerville Windmill Company and the North and West Kerry Development Company - was accepted earlier this year.

A feasibility study on the required works is to be carried out and once that has been completed, the project will move to the planning stage.

Last May management at Kerry County Council previously said that a competitive tendering process for consultants has been completed and an appointment was due to be made by the Windmill Company “shortly”.
