"Vintage engraving of Old Fashioned Bicycles, incloding The Dandy Horse, Gompertz's Velocipede, the Dublin Velocipede, Ordinary Bicycle, The Bone Shaker, and the Rover Safety."

Bicycle from 1885 - The penny-farthing, also known as a high wheel, high wheeler or ordinary, was the first machine to be called a "bicycle". It was popular in the 1870s and 1880s, with its large front wheel providing high speeds (owing to it travelling a large distance for every rotation of the legs) and comfort (the large wheel provides greater shock absorption). The term bicycle came into use and began to replace velocipede in the 1870s. In Germany, Sachs (1887) and Adler were among the earliest. Original edition from my own archives Source : Gartenlaube 1886

In comparison to the dangerous penny farthing bicycle with many serious injuries the newly developed bicycle with evenly low wheels was called safety bicycle. The first bicycle to be called a "safety" was designed by the English engineer Harry John Lawson (Henry Lawson) in 1876, although other bicycles which fit the description had been developed earlier, such as by Thomas Humber in 1868. It is the forerunner of all modern bicycles. Illustration from 19th century.
