Michael Ring calls for Christmas lights to be extended to other areas of Westport

Westport based TD, Michael Ring has called on Mayo County Council to extend Christmas lights to areas of his native town that do not have Christmas lights.

The official turning on of the Christmas lights in Westport is to take place this evening (Friday) at 5pm which will be performed by service users of Western Carn.

However, local TD Michael Ring believes that the town could do with more festive cheer and has called on the local authority to extend Christmas lights to other areas of the town.

“It is imperative that a bustling tourist town like Westport would have attractive Christmas lights. Christmas lights add to the atmosphere and create magic for locals and tourists alike,” he said.

Deputy Ring pointed out that during his tenure as Minister for Rural and Community Development, he was delighted to allocate €40,000 in 2020 under the Town & Village Accelerated Measures Round 2 to purchase and install Christmas lighting in Westport.

“In May 2023- further funding in the amount of €40,000 was allocated to extend the Christmas lights in and around the town of Westport.

“I am very hopeful that with the additional €40,000 allocated in May this year that this funding will be put to good use and extend the lighting to other areas of the town and spread good Christmas cheer. €80,000 is substantial funding and it is very important that it is put to good use”.

“Christmas is a very special time of year. The last few years have been difficult for everyone and it is important that a Christmas atmosphere is created in the town for locals and visitors. I am looking forward to seeing the Christmas lights being extended through the town,” concluded Deputy Michael Ring.
