Department stores we miss in NJ

Caldor store on Route 46 in West Paterson. This discount chain was founded in 1951. In 1999 it went out of business and many of its locations were replaced by Kmart, Target and Walmart stores.

Rickel Do-It-Yourself Super Mart on Route 17 in Paramus, N.J., April 4, 1968. The first Rickel opened in Union in 1953. The stores, located in Paramus, East Brunswick, West Berlin, South Plainfield and Wayne closed in 1997.

Christmas decorations adorned the jewelry departments of Fortunoff in Wayne in 2003. This fine goods department store opened in 1922 and closed its locations in 2008.

After a 5 year construction cycle, opening day at Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J., on May 1, 1957, featured the grand opening of the mall's Bamberger's department store, where more than 500 customers stood outside waiting for the doors to open.

Thousands of shoppers poured through the Willowbrook Shopping Center on September 24, 1969, as Ohrbach's and 90 other stores opened their doors to join Bamberger's and Sears which were already in business at the complex on Route 46 and 23 in Wayne, N.J.

Filene's Basement eventually took over the vacant Rickel's store on the corner of Lackawanna Avenue and Union Blvd. in Totowa.
