In order to develop an effective camouflage, it is important that the ground (background) characteristics and qualities are taken into consideration when adjusting the appearance of the figure so that it becomes part of the ground. In an urban environment, a tiger’s bright orange stripes are in strong contrast to the monochromatic grey of a city landscape and the ‘figure’ of the tiger is easily observed against the ground. In the jungles of India among the yellow, oranges and brown of the grasses, a tiger disappears, its camouflage seamlessly blending it into the background. Award 1 mark for explanation and 1 mark for an application of effective camouflage
- 4. Perceptual constancy refers to the tendency to perceive an object as remaining stable and unchanging (‘constant’) despite any changes that may occur to the image cast on the retina.
- 8. Perceptual Set Perceptual set is the predisposition, or ‘readiness’, to perceive something in accordance with what we expect it to be. Our expectations of what an object or event will be make us more likely to interpret the object or event in the predetermined way.
