Peperami is celebrating the 21st birthday of its iconic ‘Animal’ character – and one of the longest ever running UK advertising slogans, “It’s a Bit of An Animal” – with the launch of a gross £3m marketing campaign spearheaded by a new TVC that goes live from 14th April 2014.

On air for the first time in three years and rolling out in the UK, the Peperami TVC will run alongside VOD, digital and experiential activity. 2014 has already seen the activation of Animal’s very own twitter feed, @Peperami on 28th March, as the brand connects with younger impulse snackers on social media.

As he watches TV from an armchair in official Doc Martens – Animal’s signature boots – a news report shows a sight familiar to most of us of salad and vegetables being thrown away uneaten.  This triggers a stereotypical ‘Animal’ reaction which results in the character, revelling in his own comparative tastiness, shouting ‘I always get my five a day’ before chomping off his five juicy, meaty fingers. The ad closes with the famous strapline: ‘Peperami – It’s a Bit of An Animal’.

Alec Mellor, marketing controller for Peperami, comments: “We are really excited to see our iconic Peperami ‘Animal’ back on screen after a three year break and celebrating his 21st birthday in typical Peperami style. Animal first showed his meaty face in 1993 and our new TV ad remains true to the irreverent and subversive personality that our loyal fans have come to love and expect.’’

“The ‘Bit of An Animal’ campaign is much loved for its humour and over the last 21 years has attracted a who’s who of UK comedy talent that have featured in the ads, including stars such as Ade Edmondson, Lenny Henry, Hugh Laurie and Steve Coogan.

This year’s advert features Enn Reitel, known for his voiceovers in the famous Spitting Image series, and in 2015 the brand will be launching a search for new comedy talent to work on more exciting Animal adventures to further build on the rich comic legacy.’’

This year will also see Peperami unleash Animal on TV abroad for the first time under the BIFI brand to Belgium and Holland.

Working with the original production team and CGI animators, Loose Moose & Wicked Pixels, the first ever ‘Wimp’ creative from 1993 has been digitally re-mastered into high definition and translated into Flemish and Dutch with the “A Bit of An Animal” slogan transformed to “Bifi het is een beetje een beest”.

Mellor comments, “We’re delighted the Animal is being exported into new markets and we hope Dutch and Flemish speakers will enjoy seeing him on their TV screens for the first time in their own languages.”
