I’m a thrifty mom & me and my daughter love Comic Con – my top tip for crafting perfect cosplay outfit for cheap

A THRIFTY mom and her daughter love going to Comic Con and cosplaying together - here’s her top tip for crafting the perfect cosplay outfit for cheap.

Lillybeth Gonzalez, 47, has been going to cons with her daughter, Lilly Chevere, 25, since 2015 and the two even dress up.

“It’s great family bonding time,” Chevere told The U.S. Sun while attending the New York Comic Con. ”It really brings us closer as mother and daughter."

The two were dressed up as Zatanna Zatara, a character from the DC Comics franchise.

The character is special to Gonzalez, who said Zatanna was the first cosplay she ever did.

“Zatanna is one of the most powerful DC superheroes that has yet to have her own movie,” she said.

“It’s nice to embody a powerful character as well.”

The mother-daughter duo picks a theme at each con they go to and this year, they’ve decided to exclusively go as DC characters.

“It’s just one of the things we love. We get to play and do makeup,” said Gonzalez.

“We get to meet a bunch of people who feel the same way.”

Despite dressing as the same character, the family says they like to create their own spin on the costume.

“It’s nice to do different takes on it. We can be connected but also each dress in a way that we feel comfortable.”

To make the costumes, Gonzalez says she first decides which character she’s going to dress up as.

“We like to think of which characters we like and who we’re inspired by,” she said.

Then, they’ll find materials they already have on hand before thrifting other items.

“We use a lot of clothes and fabric we already have or thrift it,” said Chevere.

“My mom also makes a lot of our costumes.”

Gonzalez is a makeup artist who also sews and she makes alterations on the costumes if they need it.

“I really love crafting, it brings my creative side out,” she said.

If the two can’t reuse or thrift any other pieces, they’ll buy accessories as a last resort.

“Whatever we can’t physically make, we might buy it,” said Chevere.

“And if I can’t make something, I’ll give it to my mom to work her magic.”

The biggest factor in any of their cosplays, however, is making sure they feel comfortable.

“If we’re gonna do a character we want to be able to embody them and feel comfortable doing it.”
