Michelle Obama has always found interesting ways to update the classics, and at last night’s ESPY awards, the former First Lady put a modern spin on the little black dress. On hand to honor the late Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver with the Arthur Ashe Courage award, Obama chose a sleek sheath from one of her favorite labels, Cushnie et Ochs. With its zig-zagging neckline and curve-hugging cut, the Fall 2017 piece made for a standout silhouette. Jennifer Fisher’s abstract thick script earrings and a coordinating silver ring enhanced the modern, minimalist effect.

Though the crowd greeted her with an enthusiastic standing ovation, Obama kept the focus on Kennedy Shriver’s years of public service and the accomplishments of the Special Olympics’ athletes. Obama’s appearance—her first TV moment since a guest spot on Master Chef Junior back in March—offered a welcome style moment, but it was the regal way she carried herself that made the biggest impression. Moments after Obama presented the award to Shriver's son Timothy, he said what many in the audience were thinking: "once a great First Lady, always a great First Lady."
