Furman's Morlan Honored As GCAA All-American Scholar

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman sophomore Will Morlan has been honored as a GCAA All-American Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

GCAA All-America Scholars must be a sophomore, junior, or senior who has participated in 50% of their team's competitive rounds.  Recipients must have a stroke average under 76.0 in NCAA Division I and have maintained a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2.  A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.  For the 2022-23 season, 546 NCAA Division I athletes from 193 schools earned the honor.

A native of Alpharetta, Ga., Morlan holds a 3.39 GPA in business administration.  Earlier this summer, he became just the second Paladin to be named to the all-region team and the first since Keller Harper in 2021.  An All-Southern Conference selection, he led the Paladins and ranked second in the league this season with a 70.06 stroke average over 36 rounds, the lowest season stroke average in the history of the Furman program.

"This is not an easy award at all to receive, especially at a school as academically rewarding as Furman," said Paladin head coach Matt Davidson.  "We all know Will had a fantastic year on the course, but this just shows how he also excels in the classroom and with his time management.  We are really proud of him!"

Morlan became the first Paladin to win three individual titles in a season since Brad Faxon accomplished the feat in 1983.  In September, he tied for the individual championship at the Old Town Collegiate with a three-round score of 10-under after shooting a career-best 63 in the second round, then he tied for individual medalist honors at the Furman Intercollegiate at 9-under in October.  Morlan shot 18-under par to win the Hootie at Bulls Bay in March, setting both a Furman and tournament 54-hole record.

In 12 events during the 2022-23 season, Morlan finished among the top five in five tournaments and among the top 20 in all but three events.  Besides his three victories, he finished third at both the Gopher Invitational and the SoCon Championship.
