From what I have read, straight pipes were installed on the first cars but there was complaints about exhaust gas being sucked back in to the car, so Jaguar changed to the curved pipe so the gases would escape the vehicle better.

Exactly right - and I recently read somewhere that the change was made in the late S1 cars.

back in 1991, I installed 1988 XJ-40 "rolled" SS straight tips in my '84 XJ-6 and I loved the look; I took the picture below before I had a digital camera, so the quality is terrible, but you can see a little of the XJ-40 straight tips. I had no problem with the exhaust being drawn into the cabin at all with the straight tips. When I replaced the two rear resonators, I went back to the original "S" tips, but I still have the XJ-40 tips which I'm planning on re-installing.

if you want a less pronounced "S" look, somewhat between a straight tip and the original "S" tips, try the 1985 XJ-S Coupé tips, I also have a pair of those and they are a bit straighter while still retaining the "S" shape. I'm planning on installing those in my '65 S type.

Hi,

Nice work and looks like you've put some hard work in.

I recently bought a Series I Daimler in the same color and also with a factory sun roof. It's the Double Six Vanden Plas model.

Needs some body work and a repaint but she is registered and drives well. I'm on the eastern side of Canberra if you're interested in catching up sometime. I'm not involved with any clubs yet but thinking about it.

I ran a Series I Daimler Sovereign in 1972 with 'S' exhaust trims and a colleague had the equivalent Jaguar with straight trims. l recall an issue with the exhaust trims at the time.

In our damp Northern climate, Jaguars always put out steam from the exhaust on startup. With the straight exhaust trims, this would discolour the chrome over riders and the underside of the rear bumper with surface rust setting in quite rapidly. The 'S' shaped trims minimised, although didn't entirely prevent, this from happening.

Excellent. Unfortunately the V12 has been replaced with a Chev V8 but it's still a nice car. Needs some work, though from what I have seen of your car you will be a wealth of knowledge. will be great to see another series 1!

Both Daimlers are excellent looking specimens!

66VDP: Looks like your car has the same vinyl top and Weathershields sunroof that my '71 XJ6 does. Unfortunately, my sunroof is loose and rattly up front, both the latch itself, and the connection between the outer layer and the forward cross-bar that holds the latch.

Off to search for more information on that front!

Yeah the same type of vinyl. Have you had new vinyl put on? I'm planning to replace mine as its looking old but not sure where to go for a quote. Good luck with the rattle
